Liverpool's bid to push through a £15m deal for Ukraine forward Yevhen Konoplyanka fell apart in the final minutes of deadline day, but elsewhere others were more successful in adding to their squads as Premier League teams spent close to £130m in January.
Of the 56 signings by Premier League clubs in the window, 20 were completed on the final day, with the biggest spending coming from west London as Chelsea and Fulham both paid £12m for a player.
Chelsea signed Kurt Zouma from St Etienne, where the defender will spend the rest of the season on loan, while Fulham broke their transfer record to bring in Kostas Mitroglou from Olympiakos.
Crystal Palace sealed all of their deals on deadline day as Wayne Hennessey, Jason Puncheon, Scott Dann, Thomas Ince and Joe Ledley all made a last-minute move to south London.
Arsenal did their only business of the window on Friday with a loan deal for Swedish midfielder Kim Kallstrom as Emmanuel Frimpong moved to Barnsley on a permanent deal.
Meanwhile, Dimitar Berbatov's colourful eight years in the Premier League came to an end as he swapped Fulham's relegation battle for Monaco's title bid in Ligue 1, but manager Rene Meulensteen responded by adding loan signings Lewis Holtby and John Heitinga to the Mitroglou deal.
Dani Osvaldo's ill-fated five-month stay at Southampton is over at least for now, with the Saints' club-record signing joining Juventus on loan with a view to a permanent move.
Meanwhile, the long-anticipated loan deal for Manchester United winger Wilfried Zaha to Cardiff finally went through.
Chelsea were involved in four of the top five signings in January.
They sold Juan Mata to Manchester United for £37.1m - a club record for United, beating the £30.75m deal for Dimitar Berbatov in 2008 - while spending £21m to bring Nemanja Matic back to Stamford Bridge from Benfica.
Liverpool also missed out on Mohamed Salah, who chose Chelsea ahead of Brendan Rodgers' side in a £15m deal from Basle.
Hull City broke their transfer record twice in the window, first in signing Nikica Jelavic from Everton and then again in snapping up Shane Long from West Brom for a fee rising to £7m.
Chelsea were by far the biggest spenders, with an outlay of nearly £48m, but only nine clubs actually spent any money, with Manchester City, Tottenham, Southampton and Liverpool doing no business at all.
Fulham and West Ham were the most prolific, each bringing in seven players, with the Cottagers signing five on deadline day alone.
